in the atelier 90/115 cm last, unfinished watercolor no.463 1961
Horváth collection Sopron
the brillant white of the paper is reserved only for the various lights but for the base he applies a fine pastel colour. The colours put on this base will be somewhat fainter and will not shine bright white. Although these delicate shades disappear in the finished painting, they make a very harmonious overall effect. Horváth was sometimes told by his friends that his paintings should be left in an unfinished stage, for they would look very modern. ‘No way!’ — he answered, and pointed out the concise beauty of the picture: ‘This is exactly what I am after!’
